Mountain Goats in Southern British Columbia

Travel to the Purcell Mountains of southern British Columbia to hunt Mountain Goats with well-established, top-notch outfitter. The outfitter and his lovely wife are great people with 35+ years in the outfitting business. This is a full-service, all inclusive hunt with a hard working staff, home-cooked hearty meals and beautiful lodge.

A typical hunt will start when you spot your goat from the valley floor. Your guide will determine that the lone Goat with distinct black horns is probably a mature Billy. He’ll want a closer look to confirm his 2-mile assessment, so you spend a few hours climbing into a better position for the final evaluation. In most cases, the guide will confirm the target as a mature Billy and you slide into a good shooting position to finish the deal.

Most Goat hunts are tough physically and mentally and this is no different. Hunters should come in good physical condition and expect some time in or around the cliffs. I find Goats to be a fun bow-hunt, as hunters can approach a bedded goat from above with good success. Our outfitter is not what I’d describe as focused bowhunter, but they’re certainly able to guide a bowhunter on a successful Goat hunt, as he’s taken plenty bowhunters after various species thru the years.

This is one of the most game-rich areas in North America, with good huntable populations of Black Bears, Grizzlies, Whitetails, Mule Deer, Moose, Elk and Mountain Goats. We suggest hunters add Mule Deer & Whitetail tags as they can be taken while (trophy fees included) hunting goats.

Goats are pretty common in this area and we do not expect hunters to have problems locating a Billy. It’s all about the climb. We expect all the hunters that are able to climb to kill a nice Goat.

Hunts are scheduled mid-October thru mid-November when goats have excellent hair and make a beautiful trophy. They are flexible with regard to hunt dates and can accommodate most schedules (if needed)

Mountain Goats in Northwestern British Columbia

Trophy Goats near Telegraph Creek – Stikine River area in northwestern British Columbia. This is a rugged, remote 8,000 square miles of wilderness where most of the area is untouched by professional outfitting. It’s the oldest established outfitting area in the northern BC, established in 1884 by F.C. Galbreath, and famous for producing fine trophies.

Goats are the most prolific animal in this area and you can expect multiple opportunities on good (8 ½” – 10”) Billies. If you are willing to hold out, truly exceptional animals are available. One of the (2008) bowhunters shot what may be the new world record with a bow.

Good hunting can be expected the entire season, and it’s your choice between an early season alpine hunt or later in the season when the Billies hair is thick and luxurious. I would recommend the early season hunt when focusing on an exceptional P&Y trophy, and I’d hunt late September if you’re interested a good Billy with great hair. I Shot my P&Y Goat on Sept 13th(’98) and It’s got decent hair and I was happy with the appearance of the mount.

Goat hunts are always a challenge physically, but this outfitter has areas accessible by boat and horse-back. He also has areas accessible only by backpack.
